Whoever is interested in a biography of Ita Wegman based historical documents will want to know the reasons for her exclusion from the Executive (Vorstand) of the General Anthroposophical Society in 1935. This is a feature not only in Ita Wegman's biography, but also a deeply incisive event in the history of the Anthroposophical Society. There are some who look upon it as a drama of destiny, others as embarrassing failure, still others as a necessary disciplinary measure at the time. However one may look at it, the events of 1935 comprise a part of the passage of life of many who hold anthroposophy in their heart. For that reason the question of how the events need to be approached can be discovered only by looking at and asking about anthroposophy itself and its effect in history.
The attacks on Ita Wegman led in 1935 to the decision to exclude her against her will, from the Executive of the Anthroposophical Society and relieve her of the leadership of the Medical Section of the Free School of Spiritual Science. Therewith facts were generated and acknowledged that were not in accord with anthroposophy. Instead of the unanimity that can arise only out of a shared comprehension of all conditions and arguments, and which would have done justice to the exceptional human diversity of the anthroposophic world movement, space was created for the enactment of personal views, ambitions, and influences. Thus, instead of freedom, equality, and fraternity, ambition, lust for power, and egotism entered the Anthroposophical Society and brought about results that are collected, though by no means complete, in this documentation.
